چکیده

Perches can enhance laying hen welfare, but their effectiveness might be age-dependent. We investigated early and late perch access effects on anxiety fear in pullets through attention bias (AB) tonic immobility (TI) tests. Pullets (n = 728) were raised with or without multi-level perches: CP (continuous access: 0–37 weeks), EP (early 0–17 LP (late 17–37 NP (no access). AB was conducted weeks 21 37 84/week), TI performed 20, 25, 112/week). hens fed quicker than EP, LP, at (p ≤ 0.05). feeding latencies stable, while faster week had the shortest 20 < 25 (all p Unlike NP, reduced fear. Adding perches during (LP) 21, adapting by 37, removing pre-laying (EP) worsened recovering 37. prior to lay phase increased anxiety, an effect that disappeared of age. Our study indicates continuous benefits animal welfare compared no all.

Sodium bentonite can bind to dietary pigment and decreases yolk color scale. Sodium bentonite is one of the main parts of Formycine® Gold, the effect of different levels of Formycine® Gold and dietary pigment on egg quality, egg yolk color and performance criteria of laying hens from 26 to 34 week of age were studied. One hundred ninety two Hy-Line hens were divided into 24 groups of 8 birds ea...

Learning and Judgment Can Be Affected by Predisposed Fearfulness in Laying Hens

High fearfulness could disrupt learning and likely affects judgment in animals, especially when it is part of an animals' personality, i.e., trait anxiety. Here, we tested whether high fearfulness affects discrimination learning and judgment bias (JB) in laying hens. Based on the response to an open field at 5 weeks of age, birds were categorized as fearful (FC) by showing no walking or vocaliz...

Rearing Laying Hens in Aviaries Reduces Fearfulness following Transfer to Furnished Cages

Appropriate rearing is essential for ensuring the welfare and productivity of laying hens. Early experience has the potential to affect the development of fearfulness. This study tested whether rearing in aviaries, as opposed to cages, reduces the fearfulness of laying hens after transfer to furnished cages. Fear responses were recorded as avoidance of a novel object in the home cage. Lohmann S...
